History of the AK 47 Assault Rifle

The AK 47 rifle is one of the most popular rifles of all time. It has a long history that began not long after the Second World War, and the famous design has been replicated by many gun makers.

You can find AK 47 rifles for sale online or in stores, and you should definitely give this classic gun a try.

History of the AK

During the war, Mikhail Kalashnikov was injured and had to spend some time in the hospital in 1941. It’s there where he was inspired to start working on his first firearm design, thanks to a fellow soldier complaining that their army suffered from a shortage of guns while the German army had automatics.

Kalashnikov decided to design one of his own, and called the new gun an Avtomat Kalashnikova, which translates to “Kalashnikov’s automatic gun” – or, in short, AK. The number 47 stands for the year when the gun was first made, 1947.

The AK 47 is not so much an original innovation, but an innovative combination of previous rifle designs. Kalashnikov’s weapon brought together the best features of the most popular guns at the time: the German StG44 and the American M1. Kalashnikov had access to these guns, a fact which made his work easier.

The concept behind the AK 47 was to simplify the design and manufacture of the rifle, by creating a single receiver from the upper and lower receivers and combining the selector and safety into a single control-lever/dust-cover placed on the right side of the gun.

The design was completed in 1947, and the first army trial production series began at the beginning of 1948. In 1949, the AK-47 was adopted by the Soviet Army.

The rifle was highly appreciated by soldiers in the field for being reliable under a wide range of environmental conditions.

The Design and Technical Specs

The AK 47 features a simple design, and it’s meant to be a reliable fully automatic rifle that could be manufactured in the Soviet Union of the late 1940s.

The rifle can endure large amounts of dirt and foreign particles without failing to cycle, thanks to the gun’s large gas piston, reduced cartridge case size, and large empty spaces between the moving parts. The gun has a capacity of 10-75 rounds, depending on magazine used, a weight of approximately 9.5 lbs, a length of 34.3 inches, and a barrel length of 16.3 inches. The AK is gas operated using a rotating bolt and has an effective range of 330 to 440 yards. It is estimated that up to 100 million AK 47 style weapons have been built.

Kalashnikov’s rifle is a simple yet efficient weapon which has stood the test of time. It’s now known and used world-wide by civilians and the military alike.
